Summary: At this point we are all young developing singers, and placing a label on ourselves or excepting a label from someone else will only hinder us in the long run. We're still learning, which means we might not have developed the necessary technique. We just don't know our abilities yet. Therefore the best thing we can do is improve our technique, so that we will be prepared to apply our voices when they are fully mature. There are four registers in the human voice. Typically we speak in 2 which is why this is also the easiest for sing. Our head voice is in register 3, and very few can successfully access the flute register, or register 4. As a singer, we should strive to have a mixture of 2 and 3 always in our singing. The lower we are in the pitch the more 2 will be present, as well as 3 being more prominent in the higher end of our voices. Eventually we should have the sensation of all pitches being produced in the same spot. Just like every other muscle in our body, we must exercise our voices daily. That's why our register 2 is so strong, because we talk through out the day! Obviously there are circumstances that would make singing unwise for the day, but generally we need to follow the "use it, or lose it" rule.
Key Terms: Register. Register Adjustment. Portamento.
Key Concepts: "In time, you will achieve a sensation that all notes are being produced in the same spot, and that there is an even flow of air from note to note....Blending registers 3 and 2 is the foundation of the 'seamless scale'." We must exercise the voice daily. If it is not comfortable, it is probably harmful.
Making Connections: I really liked the graph on pg. 55. It really helped me to make sense of what I should be doing when I'm singing. As I have tried to implement it into my practice, I have found that this concept has helped me find better placement quicker, and I don't feel as vocally tired after I'm done singing. Hopefully as I continue to work on this I will trust my body more and more and therefore have more to my range for me to discover!
