Summary: "Teachers open the door; you enter by yourself." In order to "enter" the door you must practice each day. Your voice won't be the same every morning and you shouldn't expect it to be. Some of the principles of daily practice are: Take time to loosen the body, establish body alignment and awareness of involuntary breathing, think the sound and allow the airflow to do the work, warm up the vocal muscles, remember that each voice is different, don't hurry, understand your strengths and weaknesses, do the exercises listed in Oren's book to discover what elements of your voice are weak or missing. Just because you can look at a song and read through it, doesn't mean that you have conditioned your muscles to respond to it. When learning a new song it is not necessary to make sound, just THINK THINK THINK! Mental preparation comes first.
Key Concepts: Your voice will be different every day. When you are practicing every day, take time to prepare your body and accept where your voice is that day. When preparing new music, THINK more than sing.
Connections: I have found this to be true in my own studies. Often I expect my voice to pick up where I left off in practice the day before. I know this isn't realistic. Each day I practice I should be willing to be attentive to how my voice is feeling that day and adjust my practice accordingly.
