Summary: Those who use their voice professionally must endeavor to keep their voices healthy the same way professional athletes do. We should not try to diagnose our own vocal difficulties. If difficulties arise we should consult a professional who is acquainted with the problems that professional vocalist encounter. You can either use the voice too much (hyperfuntional) or not engage the voice enough (hypofunctional). If you end a performance feeling like you could do it all over again, that is healthy. Don't try to compensate, don't push your voice. It is better to do little than to do too much!
Key Concept: Singers should be aware of how they are using their voice. They should have a professional to consult when difficulties arise. When circumstances occur where the voice is experiencing difficulty than appropriate measures should be taken to allow proper healing.
Connections: I grew up in a large family and so I think it is my natural disposition to talk over loud noises. I also like to talk a lot. After reading this chapter I'll try to be more aware of how I am using my voice.
