LaeKin Burgess OLB Chapter 18 Summary

Summary: Your ears respond more sensitively to high frequencies than to low ones which is why high pitches don't need amplification. There is risk to your hearing if decibel levels continue at 85db or higher for a long amount of time. Don't try to hear yourself! Women singing high notes approach the most sensitive area for the ear. The tensor timpani is a sensor inside the ear that protects us from our own voices by dampening the sound. Because of this we won't hear ourselves as loudly as our audience does. Measures should be taken to test and preserve our hearing so we can keep our careers going longer.

Key Concept: Protect your hearing, once it it damaged it is hard, if not impossible to get back. We hear ourselves differently when we sing than our audience does.

Connections: I'm guilty of singing high notes loudly, because it is fun. I want to try out not listening to myself more and pay attention more to how it feels.
