LaeKin Burgess OLB Chapter 16 Summary

Summary: Some think that the less you know about the voice the better. While it is true that we should not try to direct the bio mechanics of our voices, a good understanding of what goes on in the production of sound can be helpful to our singing. The vocal folds have various different functions, respiratory, valvular, fixative, protective, deglutitory, tussive, expectorative, emotional, and phonatory. The vocal folds are attached to the thyroid notch in the front and attach to the left and right arytenoid cartilages in the back. The thyroid cartilage rests on the cricoid cartilage. The larynx is suspended from the hyoid bone located in the root of the tongue. Intrinsic laryngeal muscles only attach to the framework of the larynx. Extrinsic muscles attach to the larnyx and outside such as the shoulders and tongue.

Key Concept: Understanding the forces at work inside of you can help you understand how to sing properly.

Connections: I know that learning these things in Vocal Pedagogy this semester has really helped my understanding of how to sing. Having this knowledge has made me more aware of my singing and how to direct my voice properly.
