Summary: Agility is what makes efficiency in singing possible. This flexibility in the voice requires a throat free from all tension. The state of being that has been described, allows the singer to perform fast runs and trills characteristic of a coloratura singer. Because new muscles are being activated with each note, there is enough time for the previous muscle to exchange oxygen before it needs to be activated. This will prevent fatigue, as well as strengthening the active muscles.
Key Terms: Agility. Activation Threshold.
Key Concepts: Flexibility is the lifeline of the voice! Agility takes time!
Making Connections: I know now that I am a hyper-functioning singer. I always thought that you either had it or you didn't to be able to to coloratura like singing. Actually being able to do this skill still seem like a far ways away. I'm sure that if I practiced correctly, with time I could very well achieve success, but I can't help feel a little bit discouraged thinking how far away that goal could really be. Fortunately I know that I can achieve smaller goals sooner, and that is what I will choose to focus on. If I take my technique a little bit at a time, I can feel just as accomplished when I recognize the little successes that are on the way to big goals!
