Caitlin Craig OB Chapter 12 Summary

Chapter Summary: Our voices know how to sing better than we do, we just need to learn how to get out of the way, and let our sound come out.  Once the singer has acquired technique they can touch base with their natural native selves.  Once we have found the connection to our involuntary sound, we can condition it to respond to mental concepts.
Interpreting music requires a sensitivity to the musical elements and text.  We must discover what it meant to the composer, the poet, and what it means to us.  Songs find meaning through the interpreter, and gain importance through the ears of the audience.  It is important to cultivate strong feelings or emotions for the text which you sing.  There is no other way to make an impact, or to move your audience, and your performance will become forgettable if there is no connection to the text.  Technique is not enough to sustain a professional singing career.  Facial expression is great tool visually, but also aurally.  Changing facial expression changes color of the sound.  When we link ideas to mental images, the sound changes, and we can hear that idea represented in the sound. That is why it is important to go over a performance mentally before singing, because it helps us organize our sensory images.
"One way to build confidence is to relate new performances to successes that you have already achieved."
Be sure to live with the words, and dig into their real and personal meanings.  Learning how to put together a successful musical program is also an important skill, and can make your audiences' experience more meaningful.  Be careful when working with coaches, if you lack the proper technique it can be damaging.

Key Terms: sensory images, mental concept,

Making Connections: I think the biggest thing I need to remember to is get out of the way of my sound.  I think that I generally have a strong sense of expression, but I need to focus more on think let trust in my singing.
