Summary: "Your voice knows how to sing. It knows ow to sing better than you do." When we refine our technique we are touching base with our "native selves." Technique is the means by which we can fully interpret the meaning and emotion of a song and share it with our audience. The tools for interpretation are, time, tempo, dynamics, pitch, line, diction, tone color, emotion and meaning. Let the music lead you in making interpretive decisions. The quality of your voice alone will allow the audience to decipher your meaning. "Cultivate a strong feeling for the text of any song you are to perform." When people go to a recital they are listening with their eyes just as much as their ears. Make a good presentation and respect the poet and composer by truly studying out their intentions for the piece.
Key Concept: Performance of any song or program should be well studied and well thought out. You should develop a strong emotional connection to the text of your music so you can adequately portray that to your audience.
Connections: I feel like I've made a lot of progress this semester in getting in better touch with my body and emotions. Not that I'm perfect at it, but I feel like I'm becoming more aware of my body and how to use it to sing rather than just a prop.
