Taylee - ch4 DYV

Summary: Sometimes the idea of not controlling our voice is really intimidating. What will happen if we don't tell our legs to move when we walk, or tell our lips and tongue to adjust for each word when we talk? Well I usually stay up-right and continue moving forward, and I don't often have trouble talking. Both of these actions aren't just left up to chance! We've trained our body to do something, and then it just does it! THE BODY IS AMAZING if we allow it t be. If we think a pitch, our vocal folds adjust accordingly without any conscious force on our part. Our job is to allow our body to sing in a primal state and then bring that into a state of voluntary action. (Oren takes us as readers through a serious of vocalizes that help us to make a connection with the "huh" sensation and implement that into singing.) The airflow plays a huge factor in singing. It needs to be free and as Thomas put it generous. Trust yourself and allow your body to do what we perceive as free singing.
Key Terms: Ellicit. vocal fry. bernoulle effect.
Key Concepts: The primal sound is not the full-blown, cultivated voice that comes with practice, but the normal, spontaneous, human sound, free of all effort to "do" anything. We must carry this involuntary response over into a voluntary action when we sing.
Making Connections: I've heard Brianna tell me to "keep the sensation of the in-hale" a lot! I didn't really get it until this semester when we specified in class that we are refering to the low larynx position. Even then I didn't quite get it until I realized and identified what that feeling was and how it should feel like that while I sing. It's so much more gratifying singing with less effort and making a better sound, than beating my voice up trying to make it do things and then being disappointed when those things can't/don't happen. I really liked when we talked in class about how young singers rely too heavily on the risiliance of the body in our youth to achieve certain sounds. It made me realize just how important it is to have technique under my belt before I get to a place where my bad habits aren't covered up with my age.
