Jaron Putnam Oren Brown Summary Chapter 18

Jaron Putnam Oren Brown Summary Chapter 18

Chapter 18 Summary Oren Brown:

Summary: This chapter focuses on the importance of hearing. Hearing is an interesting idea, because it is made up of sound waves hitting an ear drum, and being interpreted through a neural connection. While everyone hears similar, it doesn't mean that what you are hearing is what the audience hears. I think the most interesting thing to me in this chapter is learning about the tensor tympani. It makes sense that we want to sing louder, higher, because this thing causes the louder pitches to seem quieter to our ears. We have to associate clear easy, resonate singing with the part of our voice that is high. This will help us the most, and will help to us to sing for the longest without fatigue.

Key Concept: Focus on release and easiness for high pitches. It probably sounds fine to the audience- if its free to your ears.

Key Terms: Tensor Tympani

Making Connections: This is a discussion that Cindy and I have had recently. I am still working to overcome the notion that I can sing higher in my voice, with no tension. To me, it sounds way too light and not heard, but to her it sounds full and nice. I need to learn to trust this!
