Summary: Singing is all about state of mind. When you are released it is because of your state of mind. You are neither relaxed nor tense, but in a state of readiness where only the necessary parts of yourself are active and ready.Since we sing with our whole body, we need to learn what things things need to be active and then how to relax what doesn't. This can include learning better speaking habits, practincing meditation or other mind empowering exercises, and also releasing tension in the body becauseall of these effect you, and you are your own instrument.
Key Terms:Release. Fixative. Hyper-function.
Key Concepts: The essence of vocal technique is to perform with the greatest freedom and the least effort. Most interfering tensions are acquired. Your voice can't be free in singing if it isn't free in speaking. We can't fix what we don't know is broken, therefore it takes effort and study on our part to understand our body and personality well enough to know when something needs attention. Breathing is the key to bringing about release.
Making Connections: I wasn't really aware of just how much I get in my own way until the MC I sang for last week. Just having that small distraction to take my head out of the singing process was enough to bring out this voice that I had no idea was inside of me. I have had my break through moments but those times I felt like I wasn't really sure what it was I didn't do (I know that I'm very much a hyper-functioning singer so when I find release it's because I'm allowing my body to not do so much). I think I'm at least going in the right direction now, and I'm excited for next semester and getting some new songs so that I can try all these things out!
