Chapter 20 Summary
Oren Brown:
Summary: This
chapter has a lot in it! This chapter defines a lot of areas that we can look
at as teachers. The end of the chapter talks about a lot of circumstances or
things that are not vocally healthy, but can be fixed by vocal therapy. The
thing that I am most worried about though is the beginning with the sections
that discusses Hyper-functioning voices and hypo-functioning voices. Most
problems stem from trying to overuse the voice. Pushing or tightening things,
singing with strain, etc. are all issues related to hyper-function.
Hypo-function while less common still needs to be worked on with some
individuals. Those that have a very light and breathy tone often have hypo
functioning voices. Each case needs to be analyzed and thought about, but the
part I like is that Oren Brown has included the chapters that you can go to to
fix the issues. I LOVED the end of the chapter- the part that talked about what
good vocal health is. I feel like that is the goal. It is a page I bookmarked.
Key Concept: There
are lots of things that can cause unnecessary stress on the voice. All of these
things are treatable. It is better to catch things earlier rather than later.
And when you do develop a problem, it is absolutely necessary to be strict in
fixing it.
Key Terms:
Hyper-function, Hypo-Function
Making Connections:
I need to spend a lot of time with the lists for hyper function and hypo
function. Memorizing and understanding HOW to recognize them in singing will be
a huge help!
