Lesson is at 5:30 today.
Kat is a difficult student. She wants to sing, but she doesn't like to do any of the exercises that I ask her to do, both in vocalizes and practicing a song. She even whines about lip buzzes. It's like she just wants a cheerleader, and not a coach. Since she is not the best about trying things that I suggest, I didn't put much of a fight up when she asked if she could sing "I dreamed a dream". She knows this piece from watching the recent movie of 'Les Mes' (no I don't want to spell it out...), so that could be a bit of a struggle trying to teach her good technique when she has Anne Hathaway as a model behavior. I know that English is not her first language, but when we do vocalizes to encourage a speech like resonance, she actutally does really well. She tends to mumble and talk very quietly so her speaking habits are not
contributing well with her singing requirements. (And the fact that she
is quiet still even after living with my family is beyond surprising.) When she starts to "sing" though, all sorts of weird vowels show up, and her timbre changes dramatically.
Short term goal: solidify rhythms; help her feel confident enough to sing independently.
Long term goal: she has a very breathy quality and a swallowed sound (she's from Germany so having her sound fall back is not surprising.) I would like to help her focus her sound. Also, I want to help her improve her musicianship. She doesn't really pay attention to what emotion/message she is trying to convey--though this will be VERY difficult since she resists all of my suggestions, even the ones that aren't weird.
