LaeKin Burgess Lesson Summary 2/17

Lesson Summary 2/17

My voice was so fatigued from all our gospel singing last week that I didn't do much but rest vocally after our concert on Saturday. Going into my lesson I still didn't feel 100% like I was ready to sing and I wondered if it would take forever to get back into the swing of things. It wasn't as bad as I had expected actually. I was surprised to find that my body still remembered what it needed to do and my voice was still responding. We started with some chewy hums first on descending five note scales. This was fine. Then Brianna tried to get me to make more nasally ni-ne-na-no-nu sounds but this was just uncomfortable and I couldn't get the sound without feeling like I was pushing or pinching. We moved on to a li-le-la-lo-lu with a relaxed and loose jaw and tongue. We tried [thi] descending first squeezing every muscle in my body then letting go on the descending vocalise. This worked only about 50% of the time. I recognized that the times I found release the most there was an obvious release in my jaw. I have not quite figured out how to get this release every time. We then moved on to some songs and moved one of them into a lower key so I wouldn't be tempted to grab at the high notes. Brianna had me sing like a drunken sailor and be really lazy about all my vowels and notes. She said I was being successful while doing this but I didn't really feel much better. My goal this week. Achieve a higher level of release like I had before 10 hours of gospel singing. I've been resting my voice quite a bit still and I think I'll do a lot of non-singing work this week. Otherwise I'm going to sing like a drunken person and do lots of lip trills and vocalises for release in the lower areas of my voice and try to work this same release back into my higher notes.
