Sarah Brenay - Lesson Summary - 2/11/14

I don't have a recording for this one so I'm going from memory here. This lesson was right before jazz week. I remember the warm ups we did vividly because I did them every day that week.
-[u] vibrating u. I took a full breath and released it like a sigh, but with my lips in the [u] shape. After a few of these we did the [u] in 54321. Really light and easy, trying to warm the voice up a bit. Then we did 8531. The goal was to go through the pitches like cities on a road map, and not to hit each one like going down stars. When I focus really hard on the pitches as though they are just colors or shades that I am passing through on a linear path I sing through them without that jarring bump on each one. It's tricky, but doable!
-Next we did some [fi fe fi fe fi] 54321. I can't remember why exactly. Just to get the sound out and forward? Or to get the vowels consistent. Either way it feels good!
-Then we did kind of a belty exercise. You simply do a chesty [ae] (as in "apple") 12321 followed immediately by an [a] (as in "awe") 12321. Then go up by half step. I could carry my chest voice up to around Bb in just chest voice doing this without any discomfort, but I still wouldn't do it more than once a day. It's narly stuff.
After that we sang through my jazz pieces. The trick was to keep everything in my nose. This kept my tone from getting airy on the top, and gave it a nice warm, unique sound. I really liked it! The thing was, I had to keep the low stuff in my nose as well, otherwise it would be too late to switch when I got higher. It sounded really cool low too though! I was really happy with the way my pieces were sounding. Cindy is so cool! I love that she can help me with jazz as well as classical singing.
