LaeKin Burgess McKinney chapter 4

What is the normal breathing rate of a person at rest?  12-16 times per minute
What are the stages of breathing for life? 1. Slow intake of air. 2. A somewhat quicker release of air. 3. A waiting or recovery period before the next intake.
What is the essential difference between breathing to live and breathing to sing?  Singing requires a suspension, or setting -up-controls period and a controlled exhalation.
What are the factors involved in getting air out of the body?expansion around the middle of the body in the upper abdomen, the lower ribs, and the back while the diaphragm slowly begins to release its tension.
What are the benefits of breathing through the nose?  (Why do we normally do this when breathing for life?)It cleans, warms and moisturizes air upon entry. It allows us to take in a relaxed, open, easy breath when done correctly.
Why does McKinney believe that aerobic conditioning is good for singers? Singers who exercise would be better and more efficient at exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen using the lower capillaries of the lungs.
What are the stages of breathing for singing? 1. Breathing in period. 2. Setting up controls period. 3. Controlled exhalation. 4. Recovery period.
How does inhalation for singing differ from inhalation for life?  Inhalation stage for singing is quicker, the quantity of air inhaled is greater, and the breath goes deeper into the lungs than during normal inhalation.
What are the three scenarios he suggests trying to condition a good inhalation for singing? Pretend you are smelling a flower. 2. Pretend you are beginning to yawn. 3. Pretend you are drinking a glass of water.
What are the three postural conditions that should exist BEFORE you inhale? The chest should be comfortably high, lower abdomen should be comfortably in, the upper abdomen should be free to move.
How does breath seem to move when you inhale? In down and out.
In the quote from Van Christy, “[When] all the muscles function properly in singing, there is a feeling of FLEXIBLE, EXPANSIVE, OPENESS in the body.
Why does McKinney say that recovery is important? If the recovery is insufficient tension can be built with each succeeding breath.
What is the secret for performing a good catch breath? Lower the jaw and do a surprised breath.
What is breath support? The dynamic relationship between the breathing in muscles and the breathing out muscles, the purpose of which is to supply adequate breath pressure to the vocal folds for the sustaining of any desired pitch or dynamic level.
What is breath control? Mainly is a function of the vocal folds. A dynamic relationship between the breath and the vocal folds which determines how long you can sing on one breath.
What are the four incorrect methods of breathing and their corrective procedures? 1. Upper chest breathing that includes noticeable raising of the chest and shoulders when breathing. Should be corrected by helping the student understand proper breathing and postural techniques. 2. Rib Breathing is when the student focuses only on expanding the ribcage while breathing inhibiting expansion and release in other necessary areas as well. This should be corrected  by encouraging the release of postural tension and encouraging feeling lower abdominal expansion. 3. Back breathing, breathing into the back so it is the sole place of expansion in breathing. Encourage frontal expansion , help them understand there is much less effort involved when the whole abdomen expands. 4. Belly Breathing. Taking a deep breath in then pushing out against your belt while you breath. It locks the diaphragm in a descended place so it can’t re-ascend during exhalation.
What is hypofunctional breathing and what are the corrective procedures for it? Failing to demand enough physical activity of the breathing mechanism. Failure to take enough breath. Correct by having the student experience all four of the stages of singing.
What is hyperfunction breathing and what are the 2 main causes and corrective procedures for it? demanding too much physical activity of the breath by taking too much air into the body. Usually caused by the misconception that the length of phrase you can sing is directly affected by the amount of air you inhale and the fear of running out of breath in a public performance.  To correct, make breath a comfortable thing. Require the student to only take comfortable breaths. Help  them understand that if we sing efficiently we can sing quite long phrases without running out.
What is hypofunctional breath support and what are the possible causes? Failure to activate enough support mechanisms to provide adequate breath pressure  for the VF to vibrate properly. The causes could be that there is no suspension phase in the breathing process, misconception that the singer is singing more loudly than he really is, an anemic concept of vocal tone, devitalized posture or a lack of awareness of the nature and function of the support mechanism.
What is the corrective procedure for hypofunctional support? Dog panting, laughing like Santa Clause. Exaggerating the functions of breath support so they can begin to feel their purpose.
What is hyperfunctional breath support and what are the possible causes? Demanding too much of the support mechanism. Can be caused by trying to make a voice bigger than it really is, pulling in on the upper abdomen, eliminating the suspension phase of breathing, excess postural tension, or too muscular an approach to singing.
What is the corrective procedure for hyperfunctional support? Student must learn to relaz the upper abdomen so that it retains ints flexibility and freedom. Encourage practicing the four stages of of breathing for singing. Make sure expansion and suspension is happening. Ask if they could sing to a baby. Ask for buoyancy not force.
