VRH critiques 10/31

Sarah Brenay- This was a really nice performance with the exception being where you forgot your words, but even that wasn't bad just don't let it show on your face. Overall I felt like your larynx stayed in a low, relaxed position. Your lower range is really smooth and rich, it's very nice to listen too. The breaths stayed generally pretty low with only a few exceptions. I would like to hear more diction. I think that will give the piece more of the direction that it was lacking. Diction will help it not to drag. Really good work!

Mariah Boyer- I feel like I've heard you sing better before. At first your vowels were really funky and I thought you could work on defining them a little better. It got better as the piece went on but at first the U in "music" sounded like and UH and the word "all" sounded like "Uhll." I think the weird vowels were a result of tension, perhaps in the tongue. Wherever the tension was coming from it was also making the pitch sag considerably. I think that if you would relax and let the breaths be lower in your body all of these things would be fixed pretty easily. You have a really nice voice that is pleasant to listen to this song just needed some release.

Carolee Beck- You have a really cool, unique voice that sounds really cool in the style of pieces you choose. There tends to be some tension in your singing that I think is caused mostly in your jaw and neck and maybe even in the breath. Focus on keeping breaths low and released. When you sing your jaw just forward which looks really awkward and tense. Try speaking the text and practicing in the mirror to avoid doing this. It was a really expressive and enjoyable performance otherwise.
