Discover Your Voice: Chapter 13
Emily Cottam
Chapter Summary: When singing professionally, it’s important that you have a strong sense of self-discipline (this includes social discipline), the desire to continuously improve, the undeniable urge to express yourself through singing, practice and skill (more than just talent), flair/poise, musicianship, an acceptable physical appearance, stage personality, people skills, dependability/reliability, patience, health (physical and emotional), and a good sense of what you’re read or not ready to do. When auditioning, sing what shows off the best qualities of your voice and what you love to sing.
Key Concepts: Going professional requires much more than just skill; it requires that you are sensitive to the people you’re working with, your awareness of your own personal skill level, and a desire to continuously improve and work for that improvement.
Key Terms: discipline, drive over talent, auditioning.
Making Connections: I’ve heard many stories of talented singers/musicians that were unable to make it in the music business because they lacked one or more of the qualities listed above--most of it involving an inability to work with people. Music, they say, is a solitary pursuit, but for a professional singer, it’s all about the people you work with, not just how you take care of yourself.
