Mariah OB 12

Mariah OB 12
Chapter Summary: Singers need to spend even more time understanding the meaning of a piece than actually singing it. Composers have given us dynamic and tempo markings to help in this process, but we must go further to understand the emotion and story in the music. When choosing repertoire, we need to seek out songs that we can connect to and that we feel strongly about. We need to develop technique, but even more important is when we get to the point where we can sing without focusing on the technique and be focused on the message. Singers need to appreciate what the poet and composer have worked to create and try to sing it accurately and portray it with emotion.
Key Concepts: "While performing, artists should focus so intently on what they want to express that they have no time to listen to their own performance."
Key Terms: color
Making Connections: I need to look more at the dynamics and tempos in my pieces and work to incorporate them more into my singing. I also need to study the text a lot more so I can always know what I'm saying.
