Amber OB chapter 14

OB chapter 14
The variations in experience levels and sound quality of choirs is vast. The use of the human voice is what they have in common though.
These human voices must be managed properly. Good choir conductors will properly warm up the choir for a good ten minutes or more at the beginning of rehearsals as one would warm up an athletic team.
Practice patterns similar to the ones for learning solo literature (starting with rhythms etc.) can be effectively applied.
Voices should be selected on a basis of what is best not only for the choir, but for that individual. Don't just uses a student because they can hit certain notes. Be sensitive to what they really have vocally so that hey don't get destroyed for you agenda.
Pick literature appropriate for the skill level and sound of the choir.
Have patience and empathy for the singers. Don't go nuts and push them like crazy in the excitement of the moment. Remember that they can get vocal wear and tear that will damage them!
Key concepts: The choir is a human instrument. Be sensitive to the wear and tear on the voices. Select appropriate literature.
