Mariah MC 11/19

Mariah MC 11/19
Kaylee Ann Simmons: Kaylee had a warm, vibrant and rich timbre but I think it could be fuller. Her knees looked very straight so she could possibly relax them a bit. She tended to fiddle with her fingers in her left hand. Also, she could use more free-flowing air for her higher notes. For masterclass, Cindy talked about  how there needs to be a deeper meaning for the nature text. There needs to be something more personal than a flower. Cindy had Kaylee project her voice in English and then German and try to avoid Swedish lips. Kaylee did very well to correct this. They moved on to projecting with a sense of agreeableness and Cindy suggested to speak ten times for every time Kaylee sings it.
Brooke Myers: Cindy began by advising singers to sing with all of the same technique when they are sick or else they will myelinate bad habits. Brooke had a rich, clear timbre for this song. She could relax her arms and hands more. In masterclass, Cindy helped Brooke drop her jaw more. Brooke had a nice, relaxed jaw and open mouth on her "oh" vowels, but on some words like "kissed" and "witch," she could drop her jaw more and have rounder vowels. Cindy helped Brooke go through the phrase and see where there were consonants she had to close her jaw for and the consonants she didn't need to more her jaw for. Cindy also had her feel her jaw while saying the text. Scaling on a word can help release the jaw so that the jaw doesn't stay in the consonant position for vowels.
Bric Slade: Bric's timbre was warmer in his higher section an was a bit pinched in the beginning. On the word "hand," he was a little tight but almost there. In masterclass, Cindy noticed that Bric's body was not as much help as it could be. He had hi stretch over in a chair and helped him to get rid of the vocal fry in the beginning. He started good, but the end of the phrase went groggy so he could continue to work with that. They did an exercise where Bric would reach up when singing and relax when not singing to get that stretch through the rib cage. Energy not rigidity is important. Bric improved a lot and he could keep going on letting go and crying into that high note.
Sarah Boucher: Sarah has a free, vibrant timbre. Cindy noticed that Sarah was coloring her voice dark and that Sarah's speaking voice was not in her singing voice. Cindy had Sarah say the text and elongate it. Sarah had a great attitude for this masterclass. Cindy advised that you don't have to make your voice good or beautiful; you just need to sing in your voice. Sarah had much more life to her singing and her timbre, especially in her higher range, was a lot richer.
