Discover Your Voice: Chapter 12
Emily Cottam
Chapter Summary: Technique is a means by which a singer can more readily/effortlessly convey emotion through their music. Interpretation of music varies with each singer--their vocal capacity and their own take of the music can alter contrasts between phrases, dynamics, and tempos. Producing an emotive performance requires that you connect with your music on an emotional level (obviously). Find ways to interpret the music/lyrics so that you can get your own meaning out of it, but keep the composer’s original intent in mind as well. Make it personal. Facial expressions and body language is a fantastic tool for communicating the meaning to the audience. “Explore the whole personality of the role.” Stay concentrated and focused during the performance. To make the performance more interesting, find ways to connect with your audience between (and sometimes even during) the performance. Vocal coaching can be beneficial, but you must be confident in knowing your own abilities to know whether or not to take to heart everything they say. There’s nothing like a live performance.
Key Concepts: Interpretation varies with the individual; don’t limit yourself by pure imitation. Know your own voice and use it to create something special with each of your pieces along with your creative interpretation.
Key Terms: Interpretation, expression, style, authenticity
Making Connections: I’m finding more and more that good technique facilitates my ability to interpret music the way I want to, and this allows me to connect with the meaning of the music more. I’m still working on getting that meaning out to the audience, but I feel that the more often I place myself into performance situations, it becomes easier for me to express myself and let go.
