Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 12 Summary

Sarah Boucher OB Chapter 12 Summary
Chapter Summary: What makes a good performance and amazing performance is the emotions we display and evoke from the audience. Although a foundation of good technique is essential, it means nothing if we don't take the time to emotionally connect with our music. We need to utilize the music and study it to begin connecting with it. We need to study the flow of the language and word stress. A well put together program, should hold an audiences attention and contain music that has meaning to us.
Key Points:
-The voice is a means to an end, the end is letting others share in the music by having an emotion response
-It is important to know about the composer and the time the piece was composed in
-"Your voice is the servant of your thoughts" (pg.129)
-Coaches and teachers can give us great insight into our pieces, but in the end it has to be our own interpretation or it won't mean anything to those watching.
Key Terms:
Making Connections: "Always treat words and music with respect, for they are not yours. You are merely the vehicle for presenting them to the audience."-Nellie Melba. This quote completely humbled me! I tend to forget that pieces are not all about me - it belongs to the composer and it is a message that needs to be shared. This is such a great insight, into music and the amazing opportunity that we have as singers to be the vehicle for music to be shared and enjoyed!
