OB Chapter 12
Interpretation is just as important as the technical stuff. A performance can be absolutely perfect, but be totally dead. The singer has to connect to the meaning and evoke that for an audience. Otherwise it is just an exercise in excruciating boredom. Also, those primal reactions to the meanings, sorrow, joy, love, etc. actually have an impact on our sound on a physical level. Adding the appropriate emotion or feeling has a huge impact. Be sensitive to how you connect to a song and how that will affect your audience.
When you put together a program, be aware of how well the elements fit together. We're taking our audience on an emotional ride when we sing. Therefor it should be one that makes sense and not just a jumble of confusing high or low points that got thrown together so that you can display all you best techniques in a program. Sometimes you may have to wait a year or two to use something really good to do it justice in the right setting.
Key concepts: always treat the words and music with respect. Develop a strong conviction of your own of how a piece should sound. Acting is as important as singing.
