Discover Your Voice: Chapter 11
Emily Cottam

Chapter Summary: Daily practice/vocalizing is absolutely necessary to maintain a healthy voice, especially for a singer. Your voice is different everyday, so it’s important that you be aware of your condition so you don’t overdo things and hurt yourself. Be sure that you’re in a place of release, have good body alignment and an awareness of your breathing, and think and let. Don’t rush your practice; like sports athletes, it can be damaging to push yourself too hard when you’re not ready. Diagnose and work on the things that could use improvement; don’t just practice the good things. Brown discusses how to learn music, much like the method Cindy has outlined in “How to learn music quickly.” Mental preparation is the first step to learning music--sometimes, singers will completely learn a song before singing it for the first time.

Key Concepts: “Think of the warm-up as vocal hygiene, just as you think of washing your face and brushing your teeth each morning.”

Key Terms: practice, preparation, daily vocalization.

Making Connections: I really liked the idea of thinking of daily vocalizing as hygiene. One thing that I struggle with (and I think I’ve mentioned this before) is that I always want to rush straight into the music without proper warmups or taking the time to prepare myself mentally and physically. I’m getting better at this, and I’m finding that discipline is really the most important quality a singer (or any individual in fact) can have.
