Taylee - SS ch 10

Taylee. Summary: This chapter was FILLED with important information. I feel like if I were to mention all of the important things in this summary, I would just end up rewriting the chapter. Therefore, I feel it is more important to emphasize the idea of this chapter as a whole. The main idea is that performing is different than practicing. If we try to involve ourselves in every detail while performing, we sound bad and we look bad. The desired product needs to be mylinated in the practice room, and then allowed to be present in the performance. Just do it. Through out this chapter, SS essentially "chunks" key topics into sub-topics that again, need to be worked on in the practice room and then allowed in performance.  Legato technique, diction, musicality, dynamics, style, these are all things that should happen but not be consciously doing while performing. The most important thing that we should be aware of is whether or not we in a free state.
Key Terms: conditioning, channeling the air, playing the game, separation of function, shadow vowel, diction, musicianship, musicality.
Key Concepts: Singing in any style should have the same goal - telling the story. Conditioning is very different from singing repertoire. We apply our skills and techniques while learning repertoire so that we don't have to think about those things when singing.
Making Connections: The main thing I took away from this chapter is how vital the practice room really is. It also emphasized the need to chunk things, both the material being learned and the technique used to learn it. I could be much more proactive about practicing. I've been so focused on memory this semester, that I forgot that I can also "memorize" (mylinate) technique as well. My goal after this chapter is to make my practice more intentional.
