Mariah SS 11

Mariah SS 11
Chapter Summary: To be successful, a key thing is to not let others influence you to the point that you lose your sense of self. Staying true to you and developing your path is beneficial to maintaining growth. Choosing repertroire is less about whether it "suits your voice" and more about how you feel about singing the piece and the message behind it. Singers need to avoid restricting themselves to categories and trust in their true, naked voice. We need to be physically and mentally prepared before we perform or audition and positively visualize ourselves performing our songs. We need to be enthusiastic in auditions but not force it to the point of overdoing it and we also need to be confident enough to avoid the apologetic factor. Smith also went over the dangers of marking something. If we mark it tightly, this can become myelinated and affect our singing. Overall, singers need "mean what [they] say when [they] say it."
Key Concepts: Singers need to be mentally and physically prepared to perform and give it their all, but mostly they need to stay true to themselves to give an honest performance and have success.
Key Terms: positive visualization, audiation, mark
Making Connections: I think I need to visualize my singing more than marking it when I am trying to memorize. When I mark it, I tend to have that tight, airy sound that Smith describes. I think visualizing will help me more than marking to understand the piece better and perform it more freely.
