Chapter Summary: Chapter 6 highlights the third invention: the balancing act. In singing it is important to find a balance in the sound. Because there is opposition in all things we must find a balance between chiaro and oscuro. Chiaro being the bright pingy quality of timbre, and the oscuro being the dark quality of timbre. This balance helps singers to free the voice, and be flexible while singing any genre. In this third invention, one sings a 1-3-5-3-1 arpeggio with the [ni]-[ne]-[na]-[no]-[nu] syllables at normal speaking range while maintaining a legato line. When sung correctly, we find a balance between the first two inventions: speaking simply, and free flowing air. There is a mix of both ping and warmth, and we find a simple and free transition of both in the voice. While singing one should feel the sensation of both speaking and sighing.
Key Terms: overcorrecting, balance, chiaro, oscuro,
Key Concepts: overcorrecting helps us to define the extreme, so that we may arrive at a balanced place. We should always feel the sensation of both speaking and sighing while singing.
Making Connections: Sighing and speaking are two things that I need a whole lot more of in my singing. The speaking helps me find that simple placement, and sighing helps me to free the air and in return free my voice. I find that when I have a good balance of both sighing and speaking my singing becomes a vehicle for expression.
