LaeKin Burgess NV Chapter 8

Summary: The fifth invention is the wobble. The wobble implies instability which is important to emphasize the release needed for this exercise. When we find this loss of control, we find freedom in our singing. This gives us more flexibility with airflow. The exercise is done across the interval of a fourth. This is because at this distance it is almost impossible to "hold" or manipulate the voice. The wobble is done in strict 16th note rhythms so that the singer cannot dwell on one note too long allowing themselves to shift back into a "holding" position. With the wobble airflow is active and phonation is passive.

Key Concept: The wobble alternates pitches that are a fourth apart. First this is done from low to high and then taken up a half step and the same exercises is done except moving from high pitch to low. Experiencing this lack of control helps singers to understand what it feels like to sing completely freely.

Key Term: Wobble

Connections: I've done exercises like this and it really helps to think of this idea of phonation being passive. Too often phonation is way hyper-active when I sing. This exercise allows me to focus on the free flexibility of the breath.
