Summary: Be Responsible. Be Flexible. Be Prepared. Be Generous. Be Humble. These five statements sum up what Smith wrote in this chapter.
Be Responsible - Becoming a better singer means taking accountability for your own voice. All singers tend to come up with excuses for why they can't sing well that day. But leave those in the dust! Also, take responsibility for your own career decisions; no coach, director, or agent can truly know what is good for you!
Be Flexible - If a conductor wants a change in your performance, accommodate it (as long as you feel it does not compromise your integrity or character. This pertains to dealing with personalities you may not love; swallow your pride enough to deal with those people.
Be Prepared - It doesn't matter how long it takes you to prepare a role, as long as you have it prepared by the first rehearsal. You inconvenience and frustrate colleagues when you come to a rehearsal unprepared, and you are also unlikely to be hired again.
Be Generous - Help a brother out! Being in a production is not all about your own voice, but who you can help along the way
Be Humble - In some performing situations, your input as a singer will be welcome by the director. However, sometimes it is not. Keep humility close to your heart so you can judge those situations case by case.
Key Terms:
Key Concepts: Basically, becoming a good singer is about becoming a good person with life skills.
Making Connections: I loved the section regarding placing responsibility on your students. I would like to incorporate that idea into my parenting and also my choir teaching.
