Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 10 Summary

Sarah Boucher SS Chapter 10 Summary
Chapter Summary: This chapter was about the challenges that come with singer actual rep. Smith talked about the importance of legato technique especially in vowel definition. Legato technique is" a constant balance of phonation and air flow with consistent intensity" He also discussed the importance of not only singing the correct rhythms and pitches but putting emotion and musicality into the music. Adding dynamics, developing agility, singing staccato and intervals were also addressed in this chapter. Smith ended the chapter with discussing the importance of classical instruction. If we learn classical music technique we will be able to sing any style. There are stylistic differences but it the foundation in always the same. If we can sing free in our classical voices we can sing freely in any style.
Key Points:
-Articulation of the vowels with free airflow and phonation is an important in transferring technique to rep.
-We should maintain the integrity of vowels and not "modify" them for any purpose.
-We should articulate consonants with minimal interruption to the air flow.
-"Good coloratura singing should feel like smooth legato singing"
Key Terms:
-legato technique
Making Connections: My favorite thing in this chapter is when Smith said "Free vocalism is good vocalism; we should sing freely with our own voice, whatever the style of music we happen to be singing." I often fall into the trap of thinking of Classical and Musical theater styles being in completely opposite worlds. This was just a good reminder to me that freeing my sound classically and training myself to have good technique will only make my musical theater voice stronger as well. I need to be better at applying classical technique to musical theater pieces as well!
