Emily F. SS 11: Making a career out of singing requires a lot of effort and has a lot of facets to it. The most important thing is to be true to oneself. We need to choose repertoire that is enjoyable to sing and appropriate for our voices. We need to learn the best ways to deal with auditioning and preparing pieces. We need to learn good time and money management.
Learning music requires several steps that may be time-consuming, but will add to the overall performance and confidence. 1-study the text 2-speak the text 3-speak text in rhythm 4-get pitches in ear 5-sing it.
Key concept: I need to know and be true to myself in order to have success in singing.
Making connections: I think I'm doing pretty well on most of these. I try to choose music that I love, but stretch myself too. I'm old enough to know how I learn and to manage my time and money. I haven't had a lot of auditions and recitals, so I'm still learning how best to prepare for those. The biggest issue I have is how to learn music effectively. I do want to skip steps and jump right in to the music. That's why it's so great to have requirements for our songs for school--I have to do the research to do the song analysis forms. This has really improved my understanding and appreciation of the music, and has helped me perform better. I just need to trust that preparation and continue to do the work necessary.
