Caitlin Craig SS Chapter 8 Summary

Chapter Summary: The Wobble is the fifth invention.  In this invention, singers can learn how to stop controlling their voice, and just let it go.  This sense of freedom gives the singer flexibility and vulnerability in all aspects of the voice: emotionally, vocally, and psychologically.  This invention is supported by all the other previous ones.  "Mastering The Wobble adds flexibility to the clean articulation, airflow, evenness, and strength gained in the first four inventions."  In this vocalise we alternate between two pitches that are a P4 apart.  We first sing them in straight quarter notes, and then begin singing them in sixteenths, producing the "wobble" of sound, and furthermore releasing all control of the voice.  After one time through, we move up a half step and continue the exercise again.  If we do not have release in the voice and free flowing air we are unable to sing those fast sixteenth notes in time.  The Wobble exercise promotes a flexibility in airflow, and loosens the vocal chords so they can stretch freely throughout the range.  Not only does this invention help singers to let go of the physical control of the voice, but also emotional and psychological control.
Key Terms: The Wobble, flexibility, fioratura passages.
Key Concepts: Keeping the airflow and vocal chords flexible, flabby and free allows us to release emotional and psychological control of our voices.
Making Connections: When practicing I find that I have a difficult time letting go, and letting things happen.  I think if I were able to find that state of mind where I don't care, the wobble exercise would be very beneficial for me.  I think this is my sweet spot at the current moment.  I'm finally grasping the idea of clean onsets, but letting things happen, and being flexible with my air is the next step.
