Summary: The Sixth invention is "getting high." This invention is all about getting the chiaroscuro balance in all ranges of the voice. The voice can be compared to a automatic transmission car. Each pitch, emotion, vowel etc needs a different resonance and position. A well trained voice can move through all of these placements automatically and without struggle. Sometimes as singers we try to move through all pitches in "first gear" so to speak. The human voice has hundreds of gears and the sixth invention is supposed to allow the voice to move in and out of these gears freely.
Key Concept: This exercise trains the voice to "naturally and instinctively modulate between the extremes of chiaro and oscuro. getting high is an eleven-tone ascending scale descending on a dominant seventh chord ending again on the starting pitch. Vowels changes from [e] to [a] and finally to [o]. All of this is to assist in natural transitions between all areas of the voice.
Key Term: Automatic transmission
getting high
Connections: This exercise is a combination of the speaking and breathing qualities in all of the other inventions. This is where application to our songs starts to happen as well. We can use these concepts and apply them to difficult passages in our songs. We can also isolate pieces of our songs and make them vocalises. The idea is to be free and let our voices do what they already want to do. We just need to get out of the way.
