Summary: The fourth invention is Spontaneous Combustion. This refers to the onset of sound. "The onset of sound is crucial to good singing because the way we produce the sound at the beginning of the phrase has a direct impact on the sound through the rest of the phrase." Spontaneity does not imply lack of preparation but rather the state of being poised to allow the spontaneous to occur. Some singers will put an [h] at the beginning of the phrase to avoid glottal friction while other singers smack their chords together at the onset. Spontaneous combustion is the perfect chiaroscuro balance from the very first millisecond of singing.
Key Concept: Repeat a series of five detached [a] sounds in the middle range. The [a] is the only vowel that cannot be manipulated and still sound like itself. The idea of this exercise is to have a clear, balanced onset on every attempt.
Key Terms: spontaneous combustion
poise
Connections: I tend to smack my vocal chords together on the onset. This is caused from me feeling like I need to push the air in order to begin the sound. I've worked on this a lot. A clear onset makes a big difference to the sound as well as the efficiency of air use.
