Chapter 10 Summary
Naked Voice:
The inventions help
us to be better singers, but we aren't "playing the game" by doing
this. Actual singing of art song or aria is where the rubber meets the road. As
we add more complex and difficult vowel combinations we need to do the same thing
that we did in the inventions. Vowel definition can be practiced by sighing and
speech singing. But we must maintain the freedom of sound and speech. We should
maintain vowel integrity no matter what part of our range we sing in.
Consonants: Consonants interrupt airflow. What we have to do is learn how to
interrupt the air flow as little as possible without creating tension on the
voice. Shadow vowels: They can interrupt the air flow… We should work to make
these sounds minimized and use them to keep the air flow constant with
consonants. Diction: should be a means to an end. The End is to have a native
speaker understand. We overununciate at times, and we need to learn not to do
this. Just speak naturally! Musicality: Singers, to use their instruments
correctly must have both musicianship and musicality to be successful in even
making proper free sounds as a vocalist. Dynamics: Singing softly requires
constant airflow but less phonation. As with all things we need to learn how to
keep our sound consistent and free with needed adjustments (singing quieter or
louder.) Florid singing: there is a 5 step process that you can use to learn a
florid passage. This will help you sing it. Staccato Singing: Staccato singing
can actually be done in the framework of legato singing. If you keep the
airflow consistent it will make and keep the sound fluent and free. Dealing
with different styles: The important thing that we need to remember is that we
need to stay true to our voice. Do not try and sing what your voice can't
handle! Basically you should be able to apply good singing techniques to all
styles and it will sound good because you are using your natural voice!
Key Concept: It
doesn't matter what you are working on. You need to keep your voice free, with
a constant air flow. That is the most important thing, hands down.
Key Terms:
Phonation, Airflow, fioratura, staccato, legato singing,
Making Connections:
Singing should be done all basically in the same way. Good vocal technique is
applied and should be applied to all areas of singing! This is important. No
matter what I am working on I can keep the same basic ideas. Freedom, constant flow
of air.
