What are the 2 functions of the larynx? Prevent food from entering the lungs and phonation.

The thyroarytenoid muscle has two folds. What does each fold form?
The lower set forms the true vocal folds and the upper set are called the false/ventricular folds.

When larynx functions as valve, which folds close?
Both.

What 8 characteristics of good vocal sound does McKinney list?
Freely produced. Pleasant to listen to. Loud enough to be heard easily. Rich, ringing, and resonant. Energy flows smoothly from note to note. Consistently produced. Vibrant, dynamic, and alive. Flexibly expressive.

What 8 negative characteristics does he list?
Constricted, forced, or strained. Strident or rasping. Too loud, resembling shouting or yelling. Hoarse. Breathy. Weak, colorless, or devitalized. Inconsistently produced. Shaky or wobbly.

What does McKinney have to say about thinking and sound production?
Beautiful sounds start in the mind of the singer. If you cannot think a beautiful sound, it is an accident if you make one.

Listening to MANY different professional singers.

What is the danger in modeling your sound after a single artist?
1. Your body is completely different from theirs so it might not be possible to create that sound. 2. They are much more experience and therefore can demand more of their voice. 3. You loose your individuality.

Attack phase: type of onset. Sustention phase. Release phase.

What are the four instructions quoted by McKinney from Van Christy?
1. Your chest should never collapse, nor should your shoulders move up or down no matter how long the phrase. 2. Don't try to sing too long of phrases. Tone quality is a bigger priority. 3. Efficient tone is basic for efficient breath control. 4. You should NEVER consciously try to control the action of the diaphragm.

Humming. Using more energy via singing louder or gentle lifting exercises. Imitating opera singers. Establish good posture and breathing habits. Activating breath support mechanism by exercises.

Exercises for relaxation of general body tension. Relaxing studio atmosphere. Reduce excess tension in the support mechanism. Maintaining beginning of yawn position. Vocalize on back vowels.
