Laura B Masterclass 9/24

Laura B
Emily Floyd: When Emily sang through on her first time with beautiful tone and generally deep breaths. I noticed though that when she went up into her higher register, it seemed like her brain went into freak-out mode a little. Her tone become more breathy, and the breathing was bucket-like and unsupportive. Her pitch in turn would also tend to go flat. Thomas worked with helping her to sing with more energy. When she sang piano, she needed to have more presence in her voice. He also had her sing the words the way that she would speak them. With the added energy, presence, and way of singing the words, her singing improved so much and their was a great clarity in the words she was singing. I'm excited to hear her sing again!
Sarah Boucher: Sarah has a wonderful and mature tone when she sings! One thing that I noticed is that her posture tended to be a little caved in, which in turn affected her breathing making it more shallow. Thomas worked with helping her breath in rhythm much in advance of beginning her starting notes. He also helped her to realize the importance of having full, free breaths, as if she was sighing. When she began to apply this, her high notes became much more full and brilliant! It was great to see the transformation that is beginning to take place in her.
Sarah Low: I was surprised by the maturity, depth, and beauty of Sarah's voice! Her high notes were exquisite and she sang with a lot of resonance. When she was running out of air, she tended to take a quick shallow breath. Other then that, her breathing overall was deep and sustaining. Thomas told her to have fun when she sang. Through having fun, she was able to create a much more buoyant sound, and shape. It was also more enjoyable to watch. Thomas also suggested that she continue to create shape with every phrase, and also have momentum towards the end of the piece. She started to apply this, which created a much more focused sound in her tone.
