Sam ER Chapter 7 Summary

Sam
Chapter 7 Summary- A destination can be a dangerous concept. When we concentrate so much on arriving at our desired destination it can keep us from enjoying all of the lovely things we could see on our journey. It is also dangerous because if we let our desire to reach our destination ruin our journey our destination won't seem as special when we finally arrive because we have practiced being unhappy throughout the course of the journey. We can avoid this tendency by practicing in a way where we are not afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes will come whether we are worried about them or not and our awareness and perception do not necessarily decline when we decide to enjoy the journey rather than worrying about getting everything right.
Key Concept-Concern over making mistakes as a pathway to target behavior can be dangerous. If we are so concerned about avoiding error at all cost then we will lose the joy of practice and our destination (if we do end up reaching it) will be disappointing relative to our original expectations.
Key Terms-Destination, Overlook, Over-try, Over-Instruct
Making Connections-As a singer and a teacher of singing I need to have the proper attitude about making mistakes. Mistakes are an important part of practice and improvement, so I can't allow myself or my students be so terrified of making mistakes and feeling stupid that they lose the joy that can come from practice and lessons.
