Sam ER Chapter 8 Summary

Sam
Chapter 8 Summary- It can be easy to think that as instructors we need a vast vocabulary that allows us to properly describe the actions of our students as well as the desired behavior. There is a lot of danger in this thought process, though. Although words can be an effective medium for communication it is oftentimes much more effective just to physically show the student the desired behavior or have them physically act out their thoughts. If we only use words for our instructions we can fall into the trap of using words that we think are useful because they sound nice, but in reality don't have a very clear meaning. We need to ensure as teachers that all the words we use to instruct students are connected directly to experience.
Key Concept-Although words are often necessary it is important to note that they are not always the most effective way of helping students understand concepts and make adjustments. We can often use physical movement to instruct students, for example. In certain cases words are needed, but unless those words are directly connected to experience they will be empty.
Key Terms-Philosophical Vagueness
Making Connections- As a vocal teacher I need to exercise great caution when I use words. Although they can be helpful if they aid the student in understanding what they need to experience to improve they can also be vague and confusing. So, I need to be careful that I don't use words too much in my teaching and that the words I do use are clear and helpful.
