Chapter Summary: Piano lessons, or any lessons, have been taken by many innocent children for decades. However, often times, these experiences turn out to be far less than pleasant and at times detrimental in the children's lives. It is important to understand that every child has a different learning mode. Counting out the rhythms may work for one child, while tapping the rhythm on the knee may work for another. When a child's learning mode is not found, the teacher begins to feel frustrated with the student for not understanding what they're teaching, the parents begin to feel guilty for not teaching their children discipline, and ultimately the student feels inadequate, incapable, and stupid. These feelings could affect them for the rest of their lives.
Key Concept: When the spirit of rebellion begins to come out, it is a sign that a new mode of learning needs to be discovered.
Key Words: Rebellious spirit, learning modes
Making Connections: I have often felt inadequate and incapable of doing what I felt needs to be done musically. At times, I felt that I must just be a person who does not have the capacity to learn how to do a certain thing. I now realize that those feelings of inadequacy were just a sign for me to figure out that I need to learn things a different way. For a long time I quenched my rebellious spirit and convinced myself that I just need to suffer through it. I now am going to pay closer attention to my inner self. When my spirit starts to bulk, I know that I have to figure out a different way to do something.
