Emily F. ER 6

Emily F. ER 6: We each have strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes our weaknesses are brought about by our strengths. We don't practice (or myelinate!) the things that we're not good at or comfortable with. This could mean that we need a different approach to what we need to work on. A standard way of teaching or learning might not cut it. We might need a more "inside-out understanding" of what we're doing.
Key Concept: Our unique strengths and weaknesses affect the way we learn.
Making Connections: I'm thinking about what my strengths and weaknesses are. Right now I'm finding a lot more weaknesses: lack of movement (all kinds), inconsistency in my range, inconsistency in my breathing, jaw tension, forcing sound, poor diction. The things I'm seeing in myself as strengths are: ability and desire to change/learn, ability to copy sound, blending (choir), richness and easiness in low range, discernment in sound (but not my own). I don't know how to categorize these things, or how to use my strengths to improve my weaknesses. I don't see a big aha! thing that will help me change what I'm doing to what I want to be doing, like the turning the staff sideways. As far as for being a teacher, we need to recognize and appreciate our students' strengths and use new approaches to work on their weaknesses.
