Sarah Boucher ER Chapter 8 Summary

Sarah Boucher ER Chapter 8 Summary
Chapter Summary: Words are not always neccesary to musical discovery. Sometimes we try to label things with words when what we really need is to experience something and make our discoveries internally.
Key Points:
-Words can mislead - "our bodies cannot" (pg. 108)
-Sometimes music is beyond verbal description, and our best discoveries will be through other means  than words.
-Demonstration can be a better tool for learning than using lots of words.
Key Terms:
Making Connection: I liked Ristad's story about skiing and how when she watched her friend ski and she allowed her body to move as it naturally wanted to she did better. When she tried to listen to lots of verbal directions she was trying to direct the biomechanics, instead of letting things occur naturally. I think this is a very good lesson for us in our teaching. Words are great but sometimes a simple demonstration can help the student more than a lecture, leaving them with more opportunities for self discovery.
