SOHH Chapter 7
Summary:
This chapter focuses
on a very, very important musical concept. But I am not happy with the
direction she took it. It is remarkable to realize that most times, we try to
over control our bodies. Not just in music but in many different aspects of
life. But It is also true for music. We are focused metaphorically right on our
feet and we are missing the beautiful scenery around us. Many times we just
need to let the music happen. Let our bodies take over and do naturally what
they can do, rather than trying to micromanage everything. There was one
experience I had playing piano in Jazz Combo. One day in class we played a
piece of music with the lights off. At first I was disoriented, I was supposed
to be playing multiple chords with different voicings, and complex color tones.
I felt confused for a moment, and then I stopped micromanaging my fingers. I
let it happen, and very surprisingly I found that I could very easily navigate
my way through the chord changes of the particular tune we were playing. Not
only could I navigate through the changes, I was listening to the other parts
of the group a lot more intently than before. I was noticing how the bass
player was walking the bass line. I could here the solo line being developed by
the soloist. My whole world opened up, and I was able to play so much better
than before. I believe very strongly in this idea of not micromanaging your
fingers, or even your voice. I need to learn how to better use this method with
the voice though.
Key Concept: You've
practiced. You've worked hard at your craft. Just let it happen.
Key Terms: Looking

Horizontal Staff
orientation
Making Connections:
I think for singing: I need to work on a technique, but then I just need to let
it happen. Stop trying to force my chords, and space to be there, just let it
happen. The Key is that I first have to myelinate that skill. Like Keeping similar
resonance even though my vowels are changing. Etc.
