Sarah Boucher Lesson Summary 9/27
This weeks lesson was great. I have been feeling sick the last few days and so I wasn't too excited about going to lessons. I felt like my sound was terrible. I did a little bit of warming up but was discouraged at the congestion you could clearly hear in my voice. I got to lessons and Laurie warmed me up. After that warm up, I felt so good! I think it is because she helps me to warm up without any tension in my throat and so the sound was free despite the congestion. I really love the warm ups that Laurie has given me, especially the ones where I make a primal sound before and then sing. We played around with different vowels in warm ups, trying to find a nice release of sound on all vowels. We worked on releasing my jaw so that all the vowels have enough space to resonate.
After warm ups we talked over my work with Thomas in masterclass. Laurie helped to cement some of the concepts we discussed, reminding me about the onset of sound and gesture of inhalation. Then we sang the second song in my Schumann set, we focused on the vowels and keeping that space - especially with the jaw released. We played around with using different vowels, and switching back and forth between them. I was really excited with my sound when my jaw was released and that is going to be my focus this week. Laurie suggested that I keep practicing the piece on different vowels, and singing it with my head tilted back when my jaw gets tight. I am also going to spend a lot of time focusing on breath and speaking my texts.
