Caitlin Craig SOHH Chapter 4

Chapter Summary: Practice can often become too serious, and our intense thinking, breathing, and living of the music can stunt us from improving.  This chapter highlights the importance of bringing out the inner clown.  The inner clown is a tool that we can use to lighten up our practice, and turn it into a positive experience, rather than an intense task.  The inner clown can provide a "delightful flip from one possibility to another," and release unwanted tension.  It takes the brain off of trying, and helps us focus on awareness.  We must maintain happy thoughts while we practice, so we can maintain a healthy and safe environment where we are able to fail or succeed.
Key Terms: Inner clown
Key Concepts: Trying fails; awareness cures.
Making Connections: I have been trying to focus on keeping my experiences in my practice room positive, and I think this chapter has brought some new light on how to do that.  As a teacher I think that providing exercises that promote good and positive experiences will help ignite my students' desire of music.
