Summary: Success, according to Smith, is finding your own path and staying on it. There is no event or measurement that defines success. You can be successful and never famous or rich, depending on your own personal definition. The wholistic approach urges us to accept ourselves as we are now. Smith concludes this final chapter with statements from students. The students commonly assert that they have found a way to integrate many aspects of their lives with singing, and have learned to be patient with themselves and with their voices.
Key Concepts: Find your own path. Stick to it. Don't measure your success in life based on what other people have done. Accept yourself and your voice as they are.
Making Connections: This was a nice way to sum up. It reminded me of what Cindy said about enjoying the journey. I really like this idea of accepting things as they are. I also enjoyed the comments from a mezzo soprano who said she's 63 and is still going strong. Cute! I hope that I can take a lot from this book and apply it to my practice. I love that we are reading many different books with different perspectives so that we can synthesize them into our own technique. I personally didn't take to everything Smith said, but there were definitely some wonderful concepts in this book.
