Chapter 13 Summary-For many who study singing, their goal is to become professional singers. It is important to realize when we set this goal that there is much more involved in going pro than simply having talent. There is no profession that requires a wider range of skills and a longer period of hard work and discipline. Obviously we need to have a good voice that is worthy of an audience. This good voice must be supported by healthy technique that can ensure longevity. A good sense of individuality can also be helpful. We must also be able to interpret music properly. Musicianship and musicality are also essential. It doesn't hurt to have a pleasing physical appearance, either. Related to but not the same as physical appearance is our stage personality. We must show those for whom we perform that we feel we belong where we are. In a singing career we will deal with many different people and a wide range of personality types on and off stage. The skill of dealing with these varying emotions and social situations is key. We must also develop a good repertoire of six to eight opera roles and as many oratorios or cantatas as possible so that we can perform well upon short notice. This is connected to the general reliability and dependability that are required for success in a vocal career. Experience is another key component. This experience doesn't necessarily ned to be professional. In essence, we just need to find and utilize as many opportunities as possible to sing in front of others. Possibly one of the most important factors is a love for singing. This is what separates those who are successful from those who never amount to much in the world of singing. We should also try our best to be in good physical and emotional health and to have efficient management and publicity. Another factor is timing. We should never sing or accept roles that we feel we are not ready for. A subpar performance can have an adverse effect on you and on your management. So, when we audition we should do our best to show our individuality as well as our good musicianship and reliability.
Key Concept-Becoming a professional singer takes much more than raw talent. To become a professional requires great love for the art as well as hard work and dedication.

Making Connections-I've thought for a long time about whether or not a professional singing career is the path for me. I think the principles discussed in this chapter will help me make that decision.
