Shalayna G. DYV 10

Chapter Summary: One can distinguish and good performance from a bad one by whether the singer has good articulation. Language allows for the song to have shape and communication. The mouth must be opened properly with free for accurate articulation. For all languages such requirements include, relaxation of extrinsic laryngeal muscles, free coordination of articulators, and firm connection with the breath. It is important to strengthen our vowels because consonants can distort our airflow. We should always refer back to the primal sound for good articulation. Although vowel modification may be needed we must remember to keep the integrity of the vowel through a smooth transition. For vowel modification, the back of the throat must be opened and relaxed. We can be successful in good articulation while singing by first working on our everyday speech.
Key Concept: We must have good articulation to convey the message of a piece.
Key Terms: unvoiced consonants, phonemes, vowel triangle.

Connection: Although we have so much to do when learning a piece, nothing is more important than making sure we are understood when we sing. I know that I personally have to work hard articulating my vowels more and not cutting them too short for consonants.
