Sarah Brenay - OB - Ch. 9

Chapter Summary: Even for those with great technique, over exercising the vocal cords can be ruinous. Practicing for short periods of time throughout the day is the most effective method of practice. Young voices cannot be expected to sing compositions for adult voices. Period. Brown details the similarities and differences between adult voices and children's voices. Extensive training is required for a long period of time to develop the voice. It can take 5-10 years or longer to train the voice. Pushing the voice, creating vibratto by using the jaw or tongue can develop into a wobble over time. (SCARY!) Singers with good health and good vocal technique who exercise their voice regularly will find that they can continue singing well into their older years. Allow your voice to mature at its own pace. Do not push it! Listen to the body and be patient.
Key Concepts: Rushing the process of vocal training will result in FAILURE and INJURY. Listen to the body. Take it slow.
Making Connections: I feel like you need to be smarter than you are greedy. I just want my voice to be ready right now! But I have to be wise about how I use it or I will never ever get there. I love this chapter! But it does make me afraid. I worry that I have already caused so much damage! But I think that Cindy would tell me if that were the case. Right?
